A more likely reason : WhatsApp’s popularity increased manifold after news of it’s acquisition by Facebook for 19bn dollars spread like wildfire. WhatsApp’s servers weren’t able to handle the new surge in users and so WhatsApp was down for 3 hours.
Tweets about the outage started appearing at around 11 AM PST, with users complaining about not being able to send WhatsApp messages.
Whatsapp tweeted about server issues and announced that the issue was fixed and WhatsApp was back up and running at around 2:48 PM PST.
