Google Glass Explorer Program was once an elite invite only program which only the chosen could enter. Google gradually loosened its hold on the explorer program. At one point, it allowed anyone in the US to buy Glass, but that existed only for one day.
Now, Google is further expanding its Glass program, enabling anyone in the US to buy Google Glass anytime (Till Google has it in stock, of course).
It will still be a prototype model you buy, mind you: Although anyone can buy it now, it still isn’t the retail model, which may be better, more loaded on features and maybe cheaper.
To get a hold of Glass, be ready to plop down $1500, which Google has refused to budge from despite teardown reports claiming that the sum of parts of Google Glass is significantly lower than that Google asks for. However. it is still rumored that Google will reduce the price in the retail version, so if you are thinking of buying one now, get ready for Buyer’s remorse.
Google made the announcement in a Google+ post. It has also released a video, which you can watch below, about the inspiring things Glass Explorers have done.
Glass first started appearing to the public in 2012 and this is the next step for the Explorer Program. We are moving closer and closer towards the final version of Glass’ consumer release date, which could be as soon as this year.
