E3 is extremely close and already companies are readying their products, games and accessories for this Expo.
Experimentation: New Controls, New Tech, Better Gaming
In recent times, there has been an upsurge in experimentation when it comes to Video Games with several new, interesting and innovative technology for viewing or controlling games.
This has led to the “Consumerization” of several fields such as Virtual Reality. These devices are fast approaching consumer shores and that poses some interesting possibilities for Gaming as can be seen on on gamingbuff.com in great detail.
SteelSeries, a well-known peripheral maker has unveiled the SteelSeries Sentry, which will be available later this year. It will also be showcased at E3 (Of course).
What is it?
The SteelSeries Sentry is basically an eye-tracker using eye-tracking tech from Tobii, which already has several eye-tracking products. Tobii makes eye-tracking products which respond almost in real-time while being accurate (According to Tobii).
What will it be used for?
Initially, the Sentry will be used for Game Training (Yes, there is such a thing). Essentially what will be done is that the eye-tracking tech will be used for tracking Fixations Per Minute (FPM), which is, to put bluntly, a value for expressing the number of times a player’s eyes wander around the environment. A lower Values means that the player can process the details of the game-environment without turning his/her gaze, meaning that the player can respond faster, making him/her the better Gamer.
The FPM directly relates to APM (Actions Per Minute).
Your FPM will be compared with the FPM of the Top-Guns in Gaming
“We are constantly looking for ways to improve, even if it’s improvement at a granular level, that will sometimes be the difference between death and victory,” said Patrik Sättermon, chief gaming officer in a Press Release.
Game Training is only the Beginning
But Game Training is only a start as after sufficient development, this eye-tracking tech would be used for controlling games too , according to SteelSeries. That’s not all though, as SteelSeries is working towards implementing eye-tracking in fields not related to Gaming too.
Deserves a Place in your Arsenal
Eye-Tracking, if accurate can prove to be a useful control for gamers, enabling faster responses. It is suitable for only a few genres though. We (And we trust Other Gamers too won’t) trade in our Laser Mouses and Mechanical Keyboard for the Sentry. However, it can prove to be a useful add-on to a gamer’s arsenal, something that may just give you the edge when competing.
The Steel Series will be showcased at E3, with it reaching gamers later this year.
