Every number jump of the iPhone 5 is a huge update to the iPhone. The jump from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 4 was staggering : New Aluminium body, retina display, faster processor, etc. The jump from the 4 to the 5 introduced a larger screen and performance improvements. This year would be the year of the release of the iPhone 6.
Rumours and leaked pictures point to the iPhone 6 having a 4.7 inch sapphire crystal screen. Apple may also introduce a two model line up with differently sized screens like they did with the iPad.
Android still takes up a staggering 80% share of global device shipments . The year 2013 saw an influx of large sized devices called ‘phablets’ an amalgamation of the words ‘phone’ and ‘tablet’ . With every major smartphone manufacturer with the exception of Apple releasing a phablet device, it seems Apple too wants a share of the fun without alienating it’s current user base by releasing two differently sized models. Apple is one of the few smartphone manufacturers that has a flagship device under 5 inches.
Also the new flagship may also feature a more power efficient 20nm A8 processor ( A7 is 28 nm ) while having the same resolution camera with improved quality.
Apple may also feature changes in the design : While a curved screen is unlikely, the iPhone may feature a bezel free design, which unfortunately makes the screen vulnerable to damage.
We mentioned above that the iPhone 6 may feature a sapphire glass screen. Sapphire Glass is much stronger than the currently used Gorilla Glass and can only be cut by diamonds and lasers . But it is inherently costlier to produce which may increase the already high price of an iPhone even higher .
UPDATE : Many sites claim that the leaked pictures are renders. However, there still is a possibility of Apple releasing a large screen iPhone in 2014 .
